Connecting While Correcting: Responding to Challenging Behavior

Description: This training explores responsive correction practices grounded in Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®) and designed for early childhood settings. Participants will learn strategies to move beyond reactive discipline toward approaches that emphasize connection, trust, and skill-building. Through practical tools and case examples, participants will explore how to address challenging behaviors in ways that promote regulation, resilience, and stronger relationships.

Presenter: Rachel Peterman, Ph. D.

Dr. Rachel Peterman received her Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Memphis with a concentration in early childhood and interventions. She is passionate about supporting children’s mental health through schools and community engagement. As a mental health consultant for Head Start and Early Head Start, she worked closely with teachers and families to address behaviors impeding learning and development. Rachel currently serves as Program Manager of Safe & Secure Tennessee, leading efforts to promote developmentally appropriate practices in child-serving organizations across the state. Outside of work, Rachel enjoys spending time with her family- playing outdoors, listening to live music, and exploring new places.
